Pursuing a PhD is a significant commitment, both intellectually and personally. Beyond a specific topic or project, a PhD is about developing independence, confidence, and the ability to tackle complex problems over an extended period of time. It is also about the environment you work in, the people you learn from, and the culture that supports your development. With us, you will learn how to learn, unlearn and relearn with an innovation and problem-solving mindset.

In our research group, we aim to provide a rigorous, supportive, and collaborative setting in which PhD students can grow into thoughtful, independent researchers with strong academic and professional foundations.

Why Do a PhD?

A PhD is not just training for academia. It is an opportunity to develop deep expertise, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills that are highly valued across academia, industry, policy, and entrepreneurship. We see the PhD as a period of intellectual development rather than simply the completion of a set of tasks. Students are encouraged to question assumptions, explore ideas in depth, and gradually take ownership of their research direction. Along the way, they develop transferable skills in communication, collaboration, data analysis, and project management.

Understanding Our Research Focus

Our group works across chemical engineering, materials science, data-driven methods, and sustainable manufacturing. Many of our projects sit at the interface between experiment, modelling, and digital tools, and often involve collaboration with academic and industrial partners.

That said, research topics are only part of the picture. What matters just as much is how the work is done. We place strong emphasis on academic rigor, curiosity-driven inquiry, and clear thinking. Students are encouraged to engage deeply with the fundamentals of their work while also understanding its broader context and impact.

PhD students in the group typically gain experience with modern experimental techniques, modelling and simulation tools, and data-driven approaches, but always within a framework that values understanding over box-ticking.

Supervision, Mentoring, and Group Culture

Supervision in the group is based on regular interaction, openness, and mutual respect. We view supervision as a shared learning process, where expectations are clear and support is consistent, but independence is actively encouraged as students progress.

We aim to foster a group culture that is collaborative rather than competitive, where students feel comfortable asking questions, sharing challenges, and supporting one another. Mentoring extends beyond research projects to include guidance on writing, presenting, career development, and navigating academic life more broadly.

Funding Opportunities

PhD funding within the group is available through several routes, including structured centres for doctoral training (CDTs) at the University of Bath.

In particular, prospective students may wish to explore:

These CDTs offer cohort-based training, interdisciplinary supervision, and strong links to industry and external partners. They provide an excellent environment for students who value both technical depth and broader professional development..

Got Your Own Idea? Let’s Talk

We are always very happy to hear from prospective PhD students who already have an idea they are excited about. If there is a research question, concept, or emerging area you would like to explore as a PhD project — even if it is still at an early stage — I strongly encourage you to get in touch.

Some of the most rewarding PhD projects develop from student-led ideas that are then shaped collaboratively through discussion. Curiosity and initiative are valued highly, and there is flexibility to co-design projects that align with both student interests and group expertise.

Who Should Get in Touch?

You might be a good fit for the group if you:

  • Enjoy tackling complex, open-ended problems

  • Are curious and willing to learn across disciplines

  • Value both independence and collaboration

  • Are motivated to develop as a researcher and professional

We welcome enquiries from students from a wide range of academic backgrounds and encourage early conversations, even if you are still exploring your options.

Interested in Learning More?

If you are considering a PhD and would like to discuss potential projects, funding routes, or whether the group might be a good fit for you, please feel free to get in touch via the Contact page or by email. A short CV and a brief description of your interests or ideas are more than sufficient to start the conversation.
